Marilou DeMontigny is 58 years old. She runs a food bank in her Massachusetts community and travels to Providence, RI to volunteer at a dental clinic serving homeless families. Marilou is also a One Family Scholar, studying to become a dental hygienist.
Central to the One Family Scholars Program is the idea of spiritual leadership. Scholars are urged to develop leadership skills that will equip them to act purposefully within themselves, in their relationships with others, within institutions, and as part of a diverse culture. The mission of One Family is to end family homelessness- and to that end it believes that with access to education and a supportive network of women, all scholars can be agents for change in their communities.
Marilou counts herself lucky to be able to give back to her community by providing needy families with nutritional meals. She shares her story with us, about the years she spent homeless on the streets of Boston, and about how, though it might be easier to forget the things she’s been through, it is much more important to remember. Marilou will never forget how hard it was for her to find stability, but she lets the painful memory of her past inform a commitment she’s made: to help those still in need.
